Sylvain Cambreling conducts LFCO

Sylvain Cambreling will conduct the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra at the Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg on Friday 3 February with the following programme of 21st century music:

Rebecca Saunders to an utterance für Klavier und Orchester - with Nicolas Hodges piano

Talk with Rebecca Saunders, Dieter Ammann and Barbara Lebitsch

Dieter Ammann Core für Orchester Turn für Orchester Boost für Orchester

Under the baton of Sylvain Cambreling, the piano is heard at first as a kind of »bodiless voice«. That is how the English Wolfgang Rihm pupil Rebecca Saunders described her piece »to an utterance« for piano and orchestra, which had its first performance in Lucerne in 2021.

After this we hear the orchestral triptych »Core-Turn-Boost« by Swiss composer Dieter Ammann, which blends a wide variety of influences (among them jazz) into a compelling style dense with events and of great colouristic refinement. Or, to use the words that Wolfgang Rihm once found for Ammann’s music: »The music doesn’t idle for one second, it’s full of life and permeated by force lines in the best sense«.
